The Royal Doulton Ship's Figurehead Collection was created in 1980 through 1983 to
celebrate the romantic era of the tall ships and their stately figureheads. Royal Doulton
produced four pairs of numbered Ship's Figureheads in fine porcelain, limited to 950
sets. Each model is numbered on the base and presented in an individual display case
and is accompanied by historical notes on each ship and a certificate of authenticity.
The figureheads are all painted by hand in rich heraldic colours and decorated with 22
carat gold.
The ship Mary Queen of Scots, was built in 1887 by John Reid of Glasgow. She was a four
masted barque trading around Cape of Horn to South America. This model figurehead
was one of two produced in 1981. This is a particularly beautiful piece and can be difficult
to locate.
A Royal Doulton figure entitled Lalla Rookh, from the Ship's figureheads series was
designed by S. Keenan. This model was issued in 1981 as part of a limited edition of 950.
The figurehead is modelled leaning forward on a dolphin and seashell base wearing a
turban style headress and robes and holding a candle. Using a palette of gold, blue, purple
and red. Measures approximately 9 1/4" high.The figurehead represents a high caste Indian
Lady. Lalla Rookh adorned the "Lalla Rookh" clipper ship built in Liverpool in 1856 for the
China tea trade. She was wrecked on the March 3, 1873.
Royal Doulton Benmore Ship Figurehead - Rare - HN2909. Benmore was an ironclad full-
rigged ship built in Glasgow, Scotland in 1870. For half a century the Benmore served the
trade markets of the world before being sold to an American in 1920. Under the new
ownership, the figurehead was repainted with the American Flag. Benmore was produced
in 1980 in a limited edition of 950.
The Royal Doulton HMS Ajax Ship Figurehead - Rare - HN 2908. Ajax was a British 74 gun
ship of the line - one of the sailing warships that formed the
backbone of the Royal Navy. Built in 1809, the Ajax won battles honours at San Sabastian
in 1813 and the Baltic in 1854-1985.
"Pocahontas" represents the north american Indian Princess Pochahontas. Attributed to t
he American ship carver William Rush and active betwen 1800-1820. The original is in the
Kendall Whaling Museum, Sharon, Massachusetts.
