Sarum Revisited

Item No: C889
Desciption: Sarum Kettle - Handle has been repaired. Origin: Sarum, the original
settlement of England and now the city of Salisbury sets the setting for this
wonderful and unique item.
It is a reproduction, not in the modern sense, but a copy of the original, which was
not even a Doulton or Watts piece, but a piece that was presented to the museum of
Salisbury in the 1890's. The original is believed to be an olive oil pitcher from North
Africa.
"The Old Sarum Kettle" pictured above although reduced in size from the original is
a red slip-coated earthenware egg-shaped vessel presently located in the Salisbury
Museum. It has a loop handle at the top, a spout on one side, and a funnel-like filler
on the other. The original vessel had, in fact, no ancient link at all with Salisbury.
Production:
Many items were made for a Salisbury firm, Watson Co. of 'Ye House of John A'Port,
for sale to tourists.
The reproductions, have an emblem in relief about half-way down below the handle.
There are two different forms of emblem, both chosen at different times by Watson & Co.
to add local colour.
Price: $140.00

Above is the mark of merchant John Halle, wool merchant and Mayor of
Salisbury in the late 15th century. It incorporates a staple, probably as symbol of
the wool trade and a cross, circle and triangle as symbols of Christianity, eternity
and the Trinity. "Kettles" with this emblem were made, it is believed, between c.1888
and c.1925.
