British Indentures

Introduction to Indentures:
Condition:
Condition is always a factor, as with most old paper documents, they may be dirty & moldy and partially missing pieces. Prices are usually determined accordingly. The finest of documents, in excellent condition, usually draw higher prices.
Our documents, are in quite collectible, readable and framable condition and are not expensive.

Materials:
As you may or may not know, documents such as these are usually scribed on parchment or velum. Parchment is the tissue lining thebody cavity of sheep. Velum being the body cavity lining of a lamb is finer than parchment and the
softer of the two.
Indentures were created for a variety of reasons, such as wills, legal documents, recording of important occasions, real estate transactions, the Indenturing of servants, employees, etc.
The forms themselves were scribed by a Calligrapher in duplicate, head to head, then cut with a scissors in a wavy line creating two parts.
The first part was kept by the town, village or city hall recorder, Constable or Justice of the Peace. The second part was given to the receiving participant. In this manner, proof of ownership or occurance could be verified by placing the two copies together, head to head similar to a puzzle. If the two halves fit, they were judged to be authentic and certify the indenture.
In the late 19th century, with the use of pre-printed forms, this style of recording documents came to an end. Being replaced by other
means such as Micro Fiche or copies from a copy machine. In today's digital world, the necessity of such laborous work has vanished.

Authentication:
Usually, English Indentures had a Sterling Stamp on blue paper, example below.

On the reverse side another stamp made of paper was usually found. This stamp
was glued to the document. It is this type of stamp that caused all the ruckus in
Boston. Remember the Stamp Act of 1764?

Historical Documents of this type are highly sought after, collectible and after framing look quite impressive.
